With the massive scientific development in the hair transplant industry, scientists always seek to evolve new hair transplant techniques to make this surgery shorter and safer. In the last 30 years hair transplant surgeries were taking a place through an old painful technique which called “follicular hair transplant (FUT)”.
The FUT process involves removing a small strip of tissue from the back of the head, from which the donor hair follicles will be extracted. The hair follicles are harvested from the strip by a skilled clinical team before being individually transplanted to the recipient areas.
There’re so many disadvantages for this technique like a scar remains on the donor area and pains during the first 2 weeks after the procedure add to that surgeons can’t extract more than 2000-2500 hair grafts at most in one session from the strip. While sorting hair grafts from the strip, many roots can be harmed and lose its effectiveness during this process.
In an FUE hair transplant method, each follicular unit is individually taken directly from the scalp with no strip of tissue being removed. Hair follicles are removed in a random fashion and the result is less density in the donor area that many say is not even noticeable. This is the main difference between FUE & FUT.
No scars can be found after two weeks of the procedure, and no pains were reported from almost all patients who undergo this surgery. FUE hair transplant considers the suitable method to treat the cases of advanced hair loss, because this technique allow to us to extract 3500-4000 hair grafts during one session of surgery.
This technique is one of the best techniques for hair transplantation because the doctor opens the hair channels in the receiving area which allow him to determine the angle of natural hair tendency.
When DHI hair transplant begin?
The beginning of this technique was by the Greek physician Konstantinos Giutis, Who founded DHI Medical Group in 1970, and moved to Palo Alto, California, USA.
His medical group then spread to include San Francisco and Beverly Hills, where it was known as Golden Creek.
The group’s common goal was to solve hair loss problems, in 1985, Gautis and his colleagues were able to introduce one of the most revolutionary techniques of hair transplantation: the method of smelting the epidermis, from which time the group became known and took its place.
In 2001, the first conference of the International Society of Plastic Surgeons was held, during that conference doctor Gautis introduced his technique which hold the name of his medical group “DHI’ which is characterized by careful handling with the scalp. And the capacity to implant the maximum number of follicles without occurring much scars into the skin layer.
Since then, this technique was considered the newest and most famous method, taught at the international medical schools.
In the same year 2001, Giutis presented at the International Conference of the International Society of Plastic Surgeons for the first time the technique of direct hair transplantation “DHI”.
What is “DHI”?
It is a new hair transplant technique performing by using a special tool called “Choi implanter” it looks like a pen so we can call it “Choi pen”. The grafts which extract through DHI are directly implant to the recipient area.
This new technology assurance you the natural hair line from the front side of your head. Also it can give you a thick hair apparence.
Advantages and disadvantages of DHI Technique
Getting a high rate of viable healthy follicles.
Decreasing the bleeding during creating the recipient area.
Decreasing the risk of an infection.
Reducing trauma during follicles transfer, and causing less damage in the blood supply to the implanted area.
Faster recovery after the hair transplant procedure.
Reducing time of procedure (with a medical team experienced in Choi implanter pens technique) as creating the incisions and implanting the follicles are combined in one step.
The doctors and medical team should undergo a longer training period to master working using this technique.
The medical team should consist of six persons at least for each procedure.
The procedure may take longer time if the team was unfamiliar with this method.
The cost of the procedure is generally more than that of conventional extraction method due to the cost of Choi implanter pens.
This procedure requires more accuracy and attention during the procedure.
Choi pen transplant technique is suitable to all patients and also for those who got a bleeding problems and weren’t before be able to impant their hair with FUE because of the bleeding.
Also for those people who have a weak donor area and couldn’t do the transplant before.
patients who don’t like to do hair transplant because they don’t want to get their hair cut so this technique allow doctors to do the surgery without shaving the hair.
